Synthetic Ice Training Centers

Synthetic Ice Training Centers

Synthetic ice can offer numerous advantages when it comes to training facilities & recreation benefits for elite and beginner athletes. Most obvious is the cost as compared to building a mechanically refrigerated surface. Not only will the initial capital cost be much less but the annual operating cost over the life of the surface will be minor in comparison – mostly due to utility expenses and equipment maintenance.

We continually see communities putting in new 4-plex arenas at a cost of $55 million plus, or about $14 million per ice surface. As a simple comparison we could realistically build over 100 NHL sized synthetic ice surfaces for similar money and these could be placed in parks, parking lots, empty warehouses, air supported structures and so on. Probably not a realistic expectation but it would resolve a long standing issue of having enough rinks in any community.

We have built some incredibly state of the art training facilities over the years and they become a popular place for kids (and adults) to work on those individual skills that often times  get overlooked in a team practice mostly due to lack of time. Training centers can include synthetic ice surfaces special built for goalie specific training or shooting, or skating skills – even incline skating ramps or skating treadmills. With the proper instruction available these training centers can provide viable revenue streams for their owners – particularly in large hockey markets.

Synthetic Ice training centers can have very structured programs and also independent self-training as well. Depending on what the hockey player needs for development they should be able to benefit from going on a regular basis to work on their skills.

Synthetic Ice Training Center Process

4 Winning Steps to Using SmartRink in A Hockey Training Center

hockey training center step one

In this initial step we will discuss your vision of what the hockey training center will be. We will ask you a series of questions that will help us better understand your hockey training requirements that will ultimately determine the right synthetic ice product mix for training your clients. Depending on the situation we can do a site visit to see the facility first hand in advance of providing any details.

Once we have a good idea of what your requirements are we will then put together a detailed estimate showing various options and alternatives for you to think about. If you wish to proceed with us you may wish to test some products and we will arrange for a product demo so that you can make sure you will be happy with the synthetic ice material.

Providing you want to move forward we will also provide detailed scaled drawings of your facility. This allows you to visualize how your facility will look and how clients will flow and move through your hockey training facility.

Most hockey training facilities take a lot of careful planning and our custom product solutions require 8-10 weeks lead time especially anything with typical hockey markings (face-off dots, blue lines, center lines, and goal creases).  Once approved and an order is placed, we will establish a timeline for production.

The most exciting part! We can bring in a team or supervise your team to ensure the installation is just right. Installations may take 1-5 days depending on how complicated the install is and how many surfaces are being considered. Other items such as dasher boards, netting, and product training are included in that timeline.

What to Consider for Training Center Synthetic Ice:

Although most suppliers claim to have a synthetic ice panel that is heavy duty or designed for heavy duty use of a training facility, what they really mean is that they have a thicker panel.

At SmartRink we take the time to really understand the intended use of your facility and we have developed exceptional material and connection systems that allow us to safely add permanent hockey markings that not only look amazing but will hold together no matter what kind of training you are doing.
